Character Survey/Headcanon (WIP)
Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is she heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Yumi stands at 5'5" barefoot, most likely weighing around 120 lbs.
For a Japanese girl her age, Yumi is considered to be slightly tall but is around the average height of the other girls at school. She was notable for being the tallest member of the group before Ulrich managed to hit his growth spurt, standing about half a foot over Yumi.
Due to practicing Pencak Silat and gymnastics, Yumi is fairly skinny but she's sporting some upper body strength, which means some slight muscle in the upper body region. Her legs are rather toned too due to running miles in her spare time.
2. How old is she?
Yumi was 14 for majority of the plot, turning 15 mid 4th season.
By the end of Evolution, Yumi is presumed to be around 16-17 years old.
3. Describe her posture. Does she carry herself well or does she slouch?
4. How is her health? Is she fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
Unlike her mother, who's health is not the greatest, Yumi is fairly healthy and very fit enough to take part (and excel) in physical activities. However, due to the damage she's taken from XANA's attacks, there is a chance she may develop health issues in adulthood.
5. How does she move? Is she clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does she perceive herself in the mirror?
Yumi is fairly attractive to attract a few boys at the school just by looking at her. While she could do so much more with her appearance, she keeps a plain, if not dark, look which doesn't really make her stand out compared to the other girls.
Yumi doesn't really consider herself a 'attractive' but she doesn't really find herself to be hideous either. Just...average looking. She seriously doesn't know what guys see in her
7. Describe her complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Yumi's rather tan face and belly area but she's quite pale underneath her clothes.
After fighting XANA for at least two years, Yumi's gained quite a couple of scars in some areas but they faded away after some time. How she managed to keep them hidden from everyone is a mystery.
8. Describe her hair: color, texture, style.
Yumi's hair is completely black, the hair color she inherited from her mother. As a little girl, her hair had been at medium length, long enough for people to play with and tie up her hair. However after her mother's miscarriage, Yumi chopped off her hair into a choppy bobcut that barely touches her shoulders when she was deeply mourning for her lost sibling.
Even after she got over the miscarriage, Yumi kept the short hair look and likes to mix up the style at times.
9. What color are her eyes?
Dark Brown
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
11. What are her chief tension centers?
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does she have six of the same suit?
13. Do her clothes fit well? Does she seem comfortable in them?
14. Does she dress the same on the job as she does in her free time? If not, what are the differences?
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Boxers. Red ones to be specific.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
2. How does she normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does she talk easily, or does she hesitate?
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
While she did move to France from Japan at a young age, Yumi barely has an accent.
4. What language/s does she speak, and with how much fluency?
Fluently, French, Japanese and maybe English.
She was currently taking Italian at school, though.
5. Does she switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
She'll switch to Japanese when she's badmouthing somebody or just plain cussing in anger. She doesn't need anyone to hear her bad mouth.
Yumi also prefers to speak to her parents in their native tongue.
6. Is she a good impromptu speaker, or does she have to think about her words?
7. Is she eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is she book-smart or street-smart?
2. Does she think on her feet, or does she need time to deliberate?
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is she more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
4. What kind of education has the character had?
5. What are her areas of expertise? What, if anything, is she interested in learning more about?
6. Is she an introvert or an extrovert?
She's an introvert by nature but she's shown some extroverted traits at some point. It's shown that she doesn't mind being by herself and is typically a loner but she has no problems talking to other students over certain topics and conversations.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is she even-tempered or does she have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
Like normal teenage girls, Yumi isn't really even-tempered. While she's not fazed by any bad insults regarding her appearance and personality, insulting her heritage, family and friends is a good way to set her off, which can end really badly. She's prone to holding small grudges towards those she's irritated by and shunning away anyone she dislikes, not really taking the other person's feelings into consideration. She's also not above humiliating people as revenge (Odd and Ulrich learned the hard way).
8. How does she respond to new people or situations? Is she suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
9. Is she more likely to act, or to react?
10. Which is her default: fight or flight?
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does she appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Despite her dark and serious appearance, Yumi's sense of humor is fairly...dorky. She appreciates a series of cheesy jokes and hilariously bad puns and won't hesitate on pulling a couple of them from time to time.
However, she doesn't really appreciate some areas of jokes such as toilet humor (finds them immature) and black humor (finds them tasteless). She particularly hates dead baby jokes due to a personal experiences and will not hold back on her emotions if it pushes her that far enough.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does she deal with them?
13. What moments in this character's life have defined her as a person?
14. What does she fear?
As much as she pull the tough girl act, Yumi has some fears she generally doesn't tell people about.
From the start, Yumi had a basic fear of failure in the sense of failing to reach her parent's expectations and failing in school work. As time passes on, Yumi's fear of failure slowly expands to failing to be a proper older sister for Hiroki, as well as failing to protect him, failing to reach OTHER PEOPLE's expectations and eventually, failing to stop any of XANA's attacks. Yumi is well known of the fact anyone killed by XANA won't be brought back to life by the RTTP program so if she fails to prevent any of XANA's attacks from being a success, it means there WILL blood technically on her hands. What I'm trying to say is that, Yumi is afraid of failing because of the consequences it'll bring, whether it'll be just a scolding to being technically responsible for someone's death. Being a good girl that is Yumi, she feels this is more than enough punishment she'll get than the one she'll receive from the authorities.
Although she won't straight out admit it, she's deathly afraid of XANA. This is a being that knows where she lives, where she goes to school, her weaknesses, her loved ones and so on. This is a being who tried to kill her and her friends so many times and tried to rid the world of humanity so many times. This is a being who's responsible for ruining one of her friends' lives and another one of her friend's disappearance. Although Yumi would like to believe that something like XANA cannot exist, he DOES exist and it won't stop trying to kill her until its goals are reached. She knows he's capable of removing her and her friends off the face of the Earth and sometimes she feels that its just dumb luck that she and her friends survive each near death encounter.
Another she won't admit but is fairly obvious is her fear of the ocean, or rather just falling into one (or just a large body of water). While Yumi had grown some fears of things that had attacked her in the past such as crows, snow, vines, Giant Teddybears etc, she managed to get over them at some point. Unfortunately, the ocean isn't one of them. The reasoning is this:
In Lyoko, there is something called the Digital Sea, which is basically the surface of the Internet. If you fall in it, you get permanently deleted. In other words, you die. Yumi has been a victim of nearly falling into the Digital Sea numerous of times, usually being saved by one of her friends or getting devirtualized by their weapons. She's actually fallen in on one incident and the only reason she actually survived was out of pure dumb luck. Even though she didn't last long in the Digital Sea, it had much more of an effect on her than she admitted and wasn't able to get over it as easily as her other short lived fears. She had just died and if it wasn't for Odd messing around on Jeremie's computer, she would've stayed dead. She doesn't like to talk about with anyone, including her friends, but you'll have an idea something's wrong when Yumi's freaking out over accidentally falling into the pool. She'll eventually realize its just water she's in but it'll just bring back really bad memories for her that only her friends would know.
15. What are her hopes or aspirations?
16. What is something she doesn't want anyone to find out about her?
Tons.
The most basic thing she's desperately keeping a secret is the existence of Lyoko and the Supercomputer, as well as her involvement in it. By this point, Yumi should be aware of the possiblities of what'll happen if talk of Lyoko/Supercomputer got out, especially to the government. Considering how the gang intially risked the ENTIRE WORLD for one person who doesn't even exist, its already one good reason for the gang to be arrested and be SEVERELY punished. Not only that, there also exists the possiblity of someone else taking advantage of the Supercomputer and using it for their own selfish desires, as shown with Professor Tyron.
Another thing that Yumi desperately keeps a secret EVEN TO HER FRIENDS is the fact Yumi originally had a sibling on the way not too long before she met Jeremie, Odd and Ulrich, which sadly ended in miscarriage due to her mother's age and poor health. The miscarriage had such a huge effect on Yumi as she desperately wanted a younger sibling, regardless of gender, after many lonely years of being an only child. This was also why Yumi quickly accepted Hiroki into the family and treats him as if he's been part with the family since forever, not ever bringing up the fact he was adopted even once to everyone. She doesn't try to hide the fact Hiroki was adopted but people usually believed he was her actual little brother and didn't question his sudden appearance so there was no need to bring it up.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with her parents.
Yumi is rather respectful of her parents and loves them very much. She doesn't really favor one over the other nor does she hate one over the other.
What she doesn't like about them however is the constant fighting they have occasionally done, once to the point of divorce. Like a normal and reasonable girl at her age, she can't stand to listen to the two fight which absolutely affects her mood around her friends. Since she's not willing to talk about it with people, nobody but Ulrich and possibly the gang really knows what's up with her family.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
Yumi originally was going to have a younger sibling that was supposed to be born sometime close to the start of the show but her mother miscarried early on in her pregnancy and her parents stopped trying afterwards. Instead, they adopted a boy named Hiroki during their trip to Japan late Season 1. Yumi was a little weird about the whole adoption process at first but quickly accept the boy as her little brother cause blood-related or not, Yumi already felt she needed to be a good older sister to this boy especially since he lacked anyone in his life.
Hiroki and Yumi were kind of awkward in their relationship at first but it eventually grew into the current typical brother-sister relationship they have together. Hiroki irritates the fuck out of Yumi but Yumi still loves the boy as if he was her actual brother. One of her worries while she's dealing with XANA is that if Yumi was to get killed during an attack one day, who will be around to keep Hiroki company? Who would Hiroki play with when he's feeling bored? Who would watch out for Hiroki and keep him out of trouble? Who would be there for Hiroki when their parents are fighting in the middle of the night? Hiroki already lost a family and Yumi can't bear the thought of her little brother of losing yet another family member, as well as herself losing another little sibling.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom she is close? Are there ones she can't stand?
Only Yumi's family is shown in canon so there's no one else really to consider.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom she considers part of her family? What are her relationships with them?
In a way, the other Lyoko Warriors (minus William and possibly Ulrich) have kind of became her family in the past two years or so. Jeremie and Odd have became into some sort of younger brothers towards Yumi, Jeremie being the behaving on while Odd's the troublemaker like Hiroki. Aelita on the other hand has became the younger sister Yumi never had and since Aelita's still kind of newish to the whole Earth business, Yumi always made sure to be the one to look out for her and help her with advice, as well as talking to her about girlish things. Aelita's a sweet little angel so she isn't totally bothered by her compared to the other guys.
The reason why Ulrich and William are excluded from this list is because...well, they're separated into the love interest category and that's kind of weird, you know? Even so, Ulrich would've probably be seen as a brother as well.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
Out of all the group, Yumi's best friend (and also big time crush) is Ulrich. They met during a Pencak Silat class at school but they didn't really hit it off as being friends until the two went to Lyoko each other. This developed into romance over time but the two aren't really able to express their feelings for each other due to complicated teenage emotions and many interruptions by about everyone. However while Yumi was willing to open up to Ulrich about certain things like her parent's constant fighting, Ulrich hasn't really shared anything like the problems with his dad and his case of Vertigo.
6. Does she have other close friends?
No
7. Does she make friends easily, or does she have trouble getting along with people?
Ok, here's the strange thing about Yumi: She doesn't have a problem interacting with new people but she doesn't have many friends.
It might be due to the fact she prefers to open up to people first before actually declaring them as friends and getting her to open up is not exactly an easy task. Therefore, achieving friendship with Yumi might be more difficult than it seems if you didn't know what you were doing.
Yumi's not the type to cry over not having friends but she ddoes get lonely from time to time.
8. Which does she consider more important: family or friends?
This is a horrible question to ask Yumi.
Being raised with traditional Japanese values and after all the SHIT her family has been through, Yumi greatly treasures her family, especially since she didn't have friends to spend time with. If you would ask this question to Yumi at an earlier age, she'd always picked family over friends.
After meeting the gang however, whether to choose family over friends is questioned. Yumi dearly loves her family very much but after all the shit she's been through with her friends, there's no legitmative answer.
At this point with her friends' friendships, Yumi basically considers them as another part of her family so the answer'll probably still be family.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has she been married more than once?
Single but forever conflicted between Ulrich and William
10. Is she currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
She's in a "It's complicated" relationship with Ulrich. While the two obviously are in love with each other, none of them can grow the balls to just say "I love you" to one another. They have shown it in many ways, however.
Much to her dismay, Yumi's also in a "unrequited love" relationship with William. While she just wants to be friends with him, William just keeps trying to win Yumi's heart to the point of even stalking her a bit.
11. Who was her first crush? Who is her latest?
Her first crush was probably no one too significant, probably a small one on a boy in her class when she was younger.
Her latest, however, is rather difficult to point out. As she's developed feelings for both Ulrich and William, its difficult for her to choose them over each other, especially since both guys like her back.
12. What does she look for in a romantic partner?
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does she relate to them? If no, does she want any?
NO.
14. Does she have any rivals or enemies?
On a technical count, Yumi's rival is Sissi but Yumi doesn't really acknowledge/bother with it cause someone has to be the mature one out of the pair. However since they're still kids, it doesn't mean Yumi is above humiliating her. Despite their rivalry, Yumi can be nice to Sissi on certain occasions and vice versa.
As for enemies, Yumi's major enemy is obviously XANA, using up at least 2-3 years of her life devoted to defeating the program.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does she fall on the Kinsey scale?
Although she is clearly in love with Ulrich, Yumi sometimes questions her sexuality at times. For now, she declares herself as "completely straight" but she'll admit she may have had some slight attraction to some of the girls at school. Practically a 1 on the Kinsey Scale.
16. How does she feel about sex? How important is it to her?
She is only 14 years old. She's not too hyped up about it like some other teenagers.
Also there's XANA to worry about. Nobody ain't got time for that.
17. What are her turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does she fit type?
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in her life?
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
4. How does she regard beliefs that differ from hers? Is she tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
5. What prejudices does she hold? Are they irrational or does she have a good reason for them?
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is she rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
2. What is her social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected her?
It's safe to say Yumi's family is at least middle class. Yumi's father is heavily implied to be the only one in the family that's working but it seems to be paying well to
3. Where does she live? House, apartment, trailer? Is her home her castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does she share it with others?
Yumi and her family lives in a house with Kadic Academy within close walking distance. Obviously, the interior of the house is Japanese influenced and many things relating to her heritage can be found inside. It seems to be a fairy big house, being two story and gated.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does she spend her money on?
5. What does she do for a living? Is she good at it? Does she enjoy it, or would she rather be doing something else?
6. What are her interests or hobbies? How does she spend her free time?
As XANA and school prevents Yumi from having free time, some of her hobbies are left up in the air. However, there is one thing she likes to do. Yumi LOVES to read. One of the main things that separates Yumi from most girls her age is that she'd prefer to read rather doing other stuff like shopping, talking to people, stuff like that.
7. What are her eating habits? Does she skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
Yumi's not necessary picky with what she eats. She'll usually eat what she's given, though she does favor her mom's cooking over the school food cause usually school food is gross. Yumi tries to be a good girl and eat healthy most of the time but sometimes she loses self control and eat some junk food once in a while (usually due to her friends' influence...)
She DOES have a tendency to skip meals however and it happens more often than she thinks it does. Since she comes home really late from XANA attacks, she doesn't take the time to reheat leftovers in case she wakes up her parents and would usually find a quick snack or just go straight to bed because she's so damn tired. She doesn't skip lunch as often as dinner but its still a possibility, leaving breakfast as the only meal of the day she's guaranteed to eat. She's lost some weight because of this.
Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is her favorite:
1. Color? Black, if it counts as a color. Dark Red or Fuchsia is another color.
2. Smell? Cherry Blossoms because of her Japanese heritage and sweat cause she's always on the run.
3. Time of day? Early Afternoon.
4. Season? She likes Summer but I associate her with Autumn cause of Lyoko Sector associations.
5. Book? Battle Royale. She's not a fan of the whole "kids killing each other" thing but she appreciates the writing and was so into the plot. Of course, she did have to read it in secret so her parents wouldn't find out..
6. Music? I can imagine her mainly into rock music, perhaps into bands no one heard of (except the Subdigitals). She's also a fan of techno music when she gets into the mood of being a dumb teenager and Japanese music ofc
7. Place? Libraries and Bookstores since she's a reader. Lyoko-wise, I associate her with the Mountain Sector.
8. Substance? I always imagined Yumi smoking cigarettes later on in her life during her young adult phase. Not to the point of addiction but just every once in a while.
9. Plant? I would give the typical answer and say Cherry Blossoms cause Japan, but I'm gonna go with a different answer and say the Higanbana/Red Spider Lily/Hurricane Lily. It's red, Japanese, beautiful and usually involved with DEATH. 8)
10. Animal? Cranes, specifically the Red Crowned Crane. As stated in the words of another Yumi RPer, "They'rebeautiful, graceful, fast and will tear you apart."

As stated in the words of another Yumi RPer, "They're
