Personality
Meeting Yumi for the first can lead to some misunderstandings how her actual character is like. Her appearance alone suggests a rather tomboyish, intimidating and even dark personality from all the black and slight negativity she wears with her. Her default personality is another thing you'd have to get past. Yumi is typically serious, abrupt, sarcastic and generally seems anti-social. Her lack of friends her own age may also give implications that she does not get along with people, at least within her own age range. Others may also find her boring to talk to, considering she does not open up so easily with people she just met. However, her more softer side does come out more than people tend to believe: Yumi has been shown to be very kind and helpful towards her friends and the younger students to the point of acting like some kind of "Cool Big Sis", both figuratively and literally; a most prominent example being Aelita, whose relationship could be seen more as sisterly rather than friends. Yumi has also shown situations of being quite sympathetic and understanding towards people, as shown with Milly's initial rejection from Ulrich and William's mistreatment from the gang.
Contrary to popular beliefs, Yumi actually DOESN'T mind talking to people. She's shown speaking with a small few of people outside her circle of friends on small subjects such as schoolor talking shit about Jim behind his back and not going "oh god ew people" every time. Reality is, unless you are trying to pry her for personal information and being obnoxious/rude/bratty (Sissi), stalking her for attention (Johnny and William) or just plain annoying (Hiroki), Yumi is generally a friendly person to speak to but its most likely you'll end as an acquaintance as she'd rather get to know someone being opening up.. There are indications Yumi could've been a popular student at school that everyone respected and knew but as shown in canon, she prefers a small but very close group of friends rather than a bunch of people as her friends.
Like girls her age, Yumi has a terrible temper. While her emotional stability is impressive for a teenage girl constantly facing death daily, once you spark her anger, boy does she get angry. Examples of her taking out her anger on people include the cold shoulder, angry outbursts, grudges, revenge and even denouncing relationships (seriously, she denounced Hiroki as her brother after he merely lost her diary). Her anger could even reach to the point she will start threatening violence if the person doesn't back off (which is something because Yumi is normally a civil person). While her anger is indeed irritating and even immature at times, its be noted that she does bottles up her emotions rather than letting them out at once. Although she's somewhat grown since her initial appearance, Yumi still doesn't know exactly how to deal with her emotions on a "mature" level yet such as talking it out with someone rather than sulking. Along with stress from her parents' crumbling marriage, being in a love triangle, struggling with school, risking her life against stopping XANA and Tyron, dealing with a lot of emotions at once can take a toll on her and its actually pretty understandable that she would blow up every now and then.
A crucial element in the development of her character is the involvement of the Supercomputer and basically XANA. After being involved with XANA for at least three years and being prone to all the near death experiences, emotionally exhausting situations (such as nearly losing her family and only friends) and basically going the same day twice on multiple accounts, its not a shocker that this is going to effect the development of this girl's life. Yumi before XANA was merely introverted, cold, quiet and generally friendless. Over time, Yumi had to adapt to the difficulties of being a Lyoko warrior: sacrificing amounts of energy (and hours of sleep) into preventing a XANA attack, being on wide alert 24/7 at all times, risking possible suspension or even expulsion due to numerous of absences and ditching class for a XANA attack, and even forgetting about her own morals and being forced to lie to get out of situations threatening to give away the secret of the Supercomputer and XANA. It isn't much of a surprise that this experience has traumatized the girl and made her much more paranoid and cautious than she originally was. As Yumi was the oldest of the group, it's logical to think that she felt the need to grow up big time and be the voice of reason among peers of a lower grade level (and prevent them from killing each other).
However, it is because of the Supercomputer that she made the closest friends she'll ever have and it is fairly certain that if it wasn't for XANA, she and the gang would have never met.
Her love life is also a defining moment of her character. While Yumi has some sort of charm that makes boys chase after her, it's really Ulrich and William that bring the worst and best out of her.
The relationship of Ulrich and Yumi is, to put it simply, complicated. They are in love with each other but they refuse to admit it to each other due to insecurities, outside interference, and just plain pride. While not together, the two teens have shown instances of being jealously possessive of each other and using other people just to irritate the other, not showing the other proper respect for each others' boundaries. This creates a rather unhealthy relationship between the two and being young teenagers at the time, they fail to realize this. Despite the unhealthiness, the two strongly care for each other, risking their lives for each other. Being two teens with emotional tension problems, however, their relationship continues to spike up and down, annoying not only their friends but fellow fans as well. It wasn't until Yumi herself decided they were better off being friends until XANA was taken down, which obviously sets the rift between the two. Even after XANA was apparently defeated, the two still have problems admitting their feelings to each other to the point of changing the subject in the middle of an obvious love confession. However as time went on, they slowly learn to talk out their problems to each other rather than bottling it up and is starting to strengthen their relationship into something much more.
Yumi's relationship with William, while troublesome, is pretty straightforward. While Yumi has shown some kind of attraction to William, she does not reciprocated William's intense feelings for her. While this shouldn't be such a problem between the two, its because of William's extreme advances towards the girl (i.e. stalking her home) and basic disrespect towards her boundaries that Yumi starts to distrust him so much, being sick of his "second-rate Casanova" act. William's possession and destruction of Lyoko only worsens her distrust of the boy to the point of abandoning him after he was rescued from XANA's grip. Of course, this does not mean she doesn't care for the boy. He was her only friend OUTSIDE of the gang after all. Fortunately, her relationship with the boy improves later on. Not only William started to respect her boundaries and leaved her the hell alone, his whole personality matures as a whole, not being so reckless and impulsive as he was in the past. She also had sympathy and held deep guilt for treating William so horribly in the past, especially since it was her mistreatment that nearly got him to betray the team on one occasion and helping Laura (and getting possessed once again) on another.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+Responsible: While Yumi is still a teenage girl and is known to screw up at times (because not everyone is perfect), it is easily shown that Yumi is the most responsible member of the group. As shown in the show, usually if someone in the gang needs someone to do something (such as Odd needing someone to take care of Kiwi), they would usually go to Yumi, knowing they could completely trust a person like her to take care of something (and because she can easily hide stuff at her house since she's the only day student). When she fails at a certain task, its most likely she will accept responsibility for it as well (though, it doesn't mean she won't complain about it).
+Mature: Another major part of her personality. At age 16, Yumi is described to be rather more mature than her age group: she's known to be the one looking after the younger members of the gang and keeping them out of trouble. She doesn't pay too much attention to witty insults and gossip, know there's no point in giving the person a reaction (unless said insults concerned her heritage). Yumi is also known to be rather emotionally strong as well, only showing moments of weakness on at least two occasions when she believed her friends were dead.
+Physically fit: Being a full time Lyoko Warrior, she had to have some kind of physical ability. While it's not so touched upon in the series, Yumi is implied to have some kind of athletic ability as she is currently known to hold the fastest time on track. It is a rather common fact that Yumi is a practicer of martial arts, specifically Pencak Silat, and is very capable of kicking someone's ass (such as Ulrich's). It is also another common fact that Yumi is a gymnast, most likely practicing her gymnastic abilities pretty regularly. These two skills help her against the monsters in Lyoko, whether it may be evasion or just destroying one.
+Intelligence: Say what you want about Yumi but you can't deny she is one smart girl. While she may not be as smart as Jeremie or Aelita, she is capable of maintaining her grades to at least a satisfactionary level, despite XANA attacks constantly cutting into her time. She's known to read books in her spare time, implying she may have more knowledge about certain things than most kids her age. She is also known to be an excellent writer as well, earning the highest grade in her class on a paper she wrote. Finally, she is known to be third in charge of the Supercomputer. While Odd and Ulrich are clearly not the brightest bulbs, the fact she could operate such a complex and complicated machine such as the Supercomputer has to mean something, especially if she's able to pull off a virtualization process with no problems (ok, there were some problems but hey, she got better).
+Warm Nature:While Yumi is usually sarcastic, snarky, and generally anti-social, Yumi could actually be very kind and caring when she needs to be. She will help out a person in need, even if they were a complete stranger or someone she disliked, and could lend an ear if someone need to get something off their chest. If you are close friends with this girl, expect her to be completely loyal to you (until you screw up, that is). She can also get quite empathetic at times as shown when she realizes how horrible she and the gang treated William after rescuing him. This could take some time for her to realize however.
-Short tempered: Yumi is usually a calm person but when she gets mad, she gets mad. She gets rather hostile towards anyone who infuriated her and as shown in the show, can happen over understandable things such as mocking her heritage or picking on her friends or really petty things like being confused for Chinese.
-Spiteful: It is common knowledge to know Yumi's not a nice person when she either dislikes you or just angry with you. Her most common tactic is the cold shoulder but she's not above getting violent or using revenge as payback (i.e. publishing an embarrassing photo in a magazine). Of course, this is only when Yumi's buttons are pushed to the max.
-Introverted: Yumi's friendly but not the type to go up and talk to people. It's not to a degree where she's shy but she just tends to mind her own business unless it concerns her. She'd rather wait before opening up to people.
-Young: As much of an adult Yumi may act like, she's still 17 years old. No matter how mature she may be, this makes her prone to the painful aspects of the average teenager and the emotional hardships relating to friendship and love that are sure to come. Not only that, but she does have the tendency to react to certain things you would not expect her to react to (such as her reaction to the loss of her diary).
-Romance Issues: She's in a love triangle where two guys are in love with her. She's in love with one of them but refuses to be in a relationship with as of now to prevent future conflict while she wants to just be friends with the other guy but he just won't leave her alone, going complete stalker on her. She isn't the person to really go to for relationship advice when she can't figure out her own problems. This also makes her not a possible candidate for romantic relationships. Sorry guys.
-Traumatized: XANA has definitely changed this girl's life with all the stress, constant danger and possible death chances she put on this girl, her friends and family. It's kind of hard hearing a sudden noise and go crazy and prepared to stand your ground right after the big bad you've been fighting for three years is gone.
-Designated Victim: I just wanted to mention this. Yumi was prone to LOTS of violence from XANA compared to everyone else in the gang. This was possibly due to being the greatest threat after Jeremie and Aelita, isolated due to being the only one living off campus and possible being the only one easily emotionally played with. She has experienced much more near-death experiences out of the gang, as well as targeted attacks. Her status might be in effect even here in Johto despite no XANA involvement.

...God, this is all weird. Out of the Ishiyama kids to throw into a video game, the non-gamer one is the one that gets chosen. Terrific. Sounds like something from a cliche kid's book...
[Yeah, she has no memory of being in Johto. Bummer.
So am I supposed to just travel around and collect gym badges just like in the games and earn my ticket home? I read the Rule book and the Trainer Tips and it didn't say it was neither possible or impossible. [A beat.] Actually, I don't think it mentioned anything about badges at all. Has anyone gotten all badges and something amazing happen to them yet?
[Something seems to have caught the girl's attention when she looked down. She bends down and holds up a Cyndaquil in one of her hands while trying to hand the Pokegear in the other. The pokemon seemed confused and was even sniffing its trainer, much to Yumi's disgust.]
Also, any pointers on how to take care one of these...um, things? It spent the last five minutes just sniffing around and...not really giving much of a reaction-
[As if on cue, fire erupted from the Cyndaquil's back, frighting the girl.]

If taking care of your own kids was exactly like taking care of your own pokemon, Yumi swore to never having children.
If she had to choose between going through a XANA attack and training (as well as raising) Sina, she'd rather take the XANA attack. Even if there's the risk of dying, at least you can put an end to the attack. You can't put an end to a pokemon unless you were a heartless, cruel monster. Yumi wasn't that of course, but her patience with Sina was closing to an end. It was fine when she was a Cyndaquil; at least she was quiet. Things got a little harder when she evolved into a Quilava as Sina started to come out of her shell but hey, things could get worst right?
Then Sina evolved into a Typhosion and things went downhill from there.

"IT'S JUST A LITTLE WATER, WHY ARE YOU FREAKING OUT SO MUCH?!"
Yumi had accidentally spilled a bottle of water, nearly getting it on the Fire pokemon. Being a fire type, it was natural for Sina to get a little upset if she came into sudden contact with water. The problem is though Sina's not "a little upset". More like greatly upset. Flames erupted from the Volano Pokemon's neck as it was having a spaz attack. Yumi could only watch in disbelief as she witnessed her pokemon's freak attack. Is she seriously doing this right now?
"Sina...don't be such a drama queen! It's not like I WANTED to dump the entire bottle on you!"
That only earned a roar from the Typhlosion, prompting the girl to face palm. If she wanted to deal with a freakishly raging demon, she would've visited herself four years in the past; back when she was starting puberty and becoming a social outcast. Lots of good memories there.
Yumi sighed as she sat back down while the Typhlosion continued to spit and scratch at the ground. At this rate, Yumi doesn't know if her patience for the pokemon would last any longer.
